Bangkok International Airport (BKK)
Airport Information
(Bangkok, Thailand)
Located in its brand-new, futuristic and very spacious terminal, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK), also known as Suvarnabhumi Airport, handles all international and domestic flights to Bangkok, with connecting flights to destinations all over the globe. The airport's seven-level passenger terminal is extremely large, and at 563,000 square metres, it is the second-biggest air terminal building in the world.
There are seven levels within the terminal itself. Level 1 is the bus lobby; Level 2, the Arrivals area, which includes transfer services, Immigration, Customs and Baggage Claim; Level 3 is known as the 'Meeting Centre' level, where most facilities are located; Level 4 houses the Departures area; Level 5, airline and airport offices; Level 6, restaurants; and Level 7 features an observation deck. Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport serves over 50 million passengers annually and around 80 flights hourly, with indications showing that this figure is set to soar.

Both local and airport express buses connect Suvarnabhumi Airport with central Bangkok and other destinations, such as the districts of Banglampoo, Ko Rattanakosin, Siam Square, Silom and Thonburi. There are also ample taxis, courtesy shuttles and luxury limousine options to ensure that you reach your destination in comfort.
The Public Transportation Centre, from which bus and taxi services depart, is located about ten minutes' drive from the terminal's Level 1 and is connected by a free shuttle service. A couple of major car hire companies are represented at Bangkok Airport allowing passengers to easily reach nearby cities, such as Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram.
Bangkok International Airport (BKK) Information: History and Facilities
The city of Bangkok planned its new Suvarnabhumi Airport for many decades to replace the over stretched Don Mueang International Airport, and the NBIA (New Bangkok International Airport Company) was formed in 1996 to manage this project. Construction finally began in 1997, when clearance of the marshy site started. However, the land reclamation lasted around five years before any actual building work could start. In 2005, the Airports of Thailand PLC was formed and although Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) was due to open the same year, due to many delays it was not actually opened until September 2006.
ATMs and currency exchange services are located in several places around the terminal and are open 24 hours. Internet access is available, although it is rather expensive. Other facilities at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport include restaurants, a Thai food court, 24-hour bars, duty-free shops and numerous other retail outlets. Luggage trolleys are readily available, but cannot be brought with you once you pass through the Immigration area.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has a small office here, as does the Thai Hotel Association. The rates offered by the Thai Hotel Association are generally better than walk-in rates at the hotels, but not as low as booking online in advance. The Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel Bangkok is located at the airport, across from the passenger terminal, and is connected by an underground walkway. The hotel features more than 600 guest rooms and provides a range of business and conference facilities.
